People who let fear stop them from taking action often use what we call “FEAR LANGUAGE“. They actually promote their fears by the way they talk. Today, take some time and listen carefully for these words from, not only others but also yourself.
The way you speak has a tremendous impact on the quality of your life. Susan Jeffers in her famous book “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway” suggests moving from the pain of helplessness to the power of action by changing your vocabulary. See the chart below:
Pain-to-Power Vocabulary
Pain Language———->———->——–Power Language
I can’t——————————————————-I won’t
I should—————————————————-I could
It’s not my fault—————————————–I’m totally responsible
It’s a problem——————————————–It’s an opportunity
I’m never satisfied————————————-I want to learn and grow
Life’s a struggle—————————————-Life’s an adventure
I hope——————————————————I know
If only——————————————————Next time
What will I do?——————————————I know I can handle it
It’s terrible————————————————It’s a learning experience
For example, “I can’t” implies you have no control over your life, whereas “I won’t” puts the situation in the realm of choice.
You may be saying something like this, “I can’t start an internet marketing business because I don’t know enough”. That kind of self-talk implies that you are WEAK, WEAK, WEAK.
Where do you come in with your fear language? If you find yourself speaking the 10 items that should never be spoken then it is high time to get that part of your life straightened out. Re-read the sentence above and take it to heart.
Instead, you could practice saying “I won’t start an internet marketing business until I attend a seminar”. That is a much stronger sentence and implies personal power.
We suggest you remove the phrase “I can’t” completely from your life (along with all the other ‘Pain’ phrases listed above). These words are crippling!
Go through the Pain-to-Power Vocabulary chart and see which language you tend to use. If you want to overcome your fears, you need to start talking more from the power-side of the chart.
Becoming more aware of how you talk is a huge step in becoming a more powerful person who takes action despite having fears. Decide now to not have any words in your vocabulary that might be considered fear language.
To the Power of Your Words!
